Castles in the sky

There is always an element of compromise when trying to depict things like fantastical ethereal multi dimensional structures, there needs to be enough of the recognisable elements to convey what it represents- big wall/battlements/towers etc as castle features and trying to include the more esoteric fantasy features that are meant to set it apart from reality. Combining the two sometimes contradictory elements can be a tricky balancing act, keeping the details vague can actually have better more 'realistic' results as does the limited palette. I've always visualised these things as continually moving and shimmering as if seen through a heat haze, not something that is easily represented by physical models..... but that is someone else's problem I thought.
